Wineries of Georgia

Today we drove out to the countryside of Georgia to its winemaking region. This region has been producing wine for more than seven thousand years and is today making a name for itself internationally.

We first visited a home where generations have made wine from their own vineyard, fermenting the grapes in clay pots stored in caverns in the cellar of the home.

We tasted a dry red, served in a pitcher and drunk from a traditional clay bowl.

Debb took lessons from the lady of the house in rolling bread dough and cooking it by slapping the raw loaf on the side of a hot clay "oven" heated with burning grape vines. Amazingly the dough doesn't slide down! Delicious!

And I tried my hand at making a traditional Georgian sweet -- walnuts inside a caramel-like coating that's actually leftover grape juice thickened with a little flour. I coat the walnuts with this thick paste, and when finished I have something that looks like a candle. When it cools you eat it. With no added sugar, it's sweet without being overpowering. Quite tasty.

Then we drove to a commercial winery that reminded me of Napa. They make reds, whites and sparkling wines.

We tasted five varieties that were also quite delicious.

And fortunately we weren't driving!
