Tbilisi, Georgia

An interesting day sightseeing in Tbilisi. Georgia overthrew the Soviet Union in 1992 but evidence remains of what they call the "Soviet Occupation (1921-1991)." Most visible is a huge statue of Mother Georgia that the Soviets erected high on a hill overlooking the city. Not that offensive, though.

On the other bank of the river, facing Mother Georgia, is the king (whose name I couldn't pronounce nor remember) who founded the city in the 5th century. The story goes that Mother Georgia is offering him a bowl of wine, but he says "no thanks, I'm driving." Yuk yuk.

The presidential residence. Note the interesting glass dome.

The Peace Bridge over the river, finished in 2007.

And, as in any city, lots of interesting-looking people.

After a long day of walking we rested on a park bench ...

... and had a fine lunch at a local Georgian restaurant.
