More Samarqand

Today we visited a mausoleum, a madrasah, and a market. Above is the mausoleum, actually, a collection of mausoleums each built ca. 14th century and each a small stand-alone one room building that is ornately decorated.

A plaque outside each attempts to identify ...

... who is interred inside.

Equally enjoyable is the people watching. It's Sunday and apparently many Uzbeks come to see the mausoleums as well. They are adorable.

And they LOVE seeing Americans. Debb, the quintessential American beauty, is accosted often for a group photo.

From the mausoleums we drive over to the madrasah. Saw a car moving a bed frame.

U.S. In front of the Registan Madrassah. A madrassah is kind of a university, but now is more of a museum plus a bazaar.

The rooms and ceilings are gorgeous.

And Debb finds an embroidery to buy ...

... and later at the market, a knit shawl ...

... and, of course, her favorite thing: spices!

As we wait for our guide to meet us to go back to the hotel we sit next to four young Uzbek men. At first they're a bit suspicious of us, but one's English is good enough to start a stilted conversation. They're nice but get up to leave after five or ten minutes. Our guide arrives, and we notice one young man left his cellphone on the bench! Our guide picks it up, confident the owner will call. A few minutes he does, runs back over to retrieve it, and realizes it was us who found it. He jumps on the back of the trolley taking them away and all four are all smiles, waving and saying goodbye. A truly enjoyable interaction!
