Another city, another ancient palace. The kings of Sri Lanka seemed to move the seat of government around the country a lot. At Polonnaruwa, in the 12th century King Parakramabahu the Great built a huge palace complex consisting of multiple buildings and shrines. Above is the site of his palace, which was believed to be a seven story edifice. Only the foundation and walls from the first two stories remain. Wood timbers went through the holes in the walls to support the floors.
A magnificent, well-preserved and enormous stupa.

... and many exquisite carvings.
But perhaps the most impressive was the huge Buddhas carved directly from the sandstone.
Including a magnificent reclining Buddha.
