This morning (after the elephant adventure) we drive up into the mountains to see the cave temples. Apparently a king of Sri Lanka, in the first century BCE, carved Buddhas into the stone of a cave high up a mountain, and commissioned artists to paint the walls with more Buddhist images. Subsequent kings kept up the tradition (good karma, you know) and after several centuries there are now five caverns filled with Buddhas, stupas, wall and ceiling paintings, etc. this was recently given over to the monks and is now a monastery.
A reclining Buddha with lotus petals painted on his feet, signifying his walk through the lotus flowers on the way to enlightenment.
Note all the Buddha images painted on the cave ceiling.
We both loved this place. Beautiful and serene.
