After a long day of flying we land at Colombo, Sri Lanka where we find we're taking helicopters from the Air Force base to get to Dambulla! Apparently it's either a 45-min. flight or 5-1/2 hours by bus. It takes four choppers, seating 24, to get us all up here.
They hand out these odd boarding passes to us, only to collect them minutes later. We were already on the base. I'm not sure what purpose this served.
Landing at the lodge.
The lodge is up in a jungle east of Dambulla with great views. We are greeted by a local dance troupe ...
and an elephant! Debb makes a friend. We are supposed to get to ride an elephant while here ... that'll make three firsts: camel, helicopter, elephant!
